Prevention and Early Intervention Protocols

Prevention and early intervention protocols involved the implementation of prophylactic patient assessment and monitoring and relevant interventions to attempt to prevent a symptom and identify early stages of symptom development. Tes approach for symptom management was evaluated in patients with cancer for prevention and management of lymphedema.

Preoperative Dexamethasone

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that has been used to manage multiple symptoms in patients with cancer. Preoperative administration of dexamethasone has been evaluated for its effect on postoperative pain.

Preoperative Antibiotics

Giving antibiotics prior to surgery, at the time of anesthesia induction, has been identified as an intervention for the prevention of surgical site infections, and general use of antibiotic prophylaxis has been recommended in guidelines for some types of surgery. In addition, oral antibiotics prior to colon surgery in patients with cancer have been examined for effect on postoperative infection rates.

Pregabalin and Antidepressant Combination

Pregabalin is an anticonvulsant used to relieve neuropathic pain and is used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures. It works by decreasing the number of pain signals that are sent out by damaged nerves in the body. The combination of pregabalin and medication used to treat depression was tested for its effect on cancer-related pain.

Pre-construction Planning

Pre-construction planning involves the planning and implementation of activities to maintain appropriate environmental measures to prevent patient exposure to potentially infectious agents that can be introduced into the environment during construction. Planning generally also involves education of contractors and construction workers and ongoing monitoring of conditions and compliance with required procedures under the guidance of professional infection prevention and control personnel.

Povidone Iodine

Povidone iodine is a chemical complex of povidone and elemental iodine. It is an antiseptic. It has been widely used as a pre-operative skin cleansing agent and for the treatment and prevention of infection in wounds.  Povidone iodine in the form of an oral rinse has been evaluated in patients with cancer for prevention and treatment of mucositis.

Potassium Permanganate and Sulfosalicylic Cream

Potassium permanganate is an inorganic chemical compound that is diluted in water and used to treat weeping skin conditions. It has both antiseptic and astringent properties. Sulfosalicylic cream has been used to treat skin conditions caused by microorganisms on the skin.

Polymeric Dressing

Polymeric membrane dressings consist of a thin polyurethane foam membrane providing a porous structure that exudates fluid from wounds, controls water loss, and promotes moist wound healing conditions. A variety of polymeric dressings have been developed that also may contain substances such as moisturizers or surfactant to help debride tissue. Polymeric dressings have been evaluated for their efficacy in the treatment of radiodermatitis.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a type of osmotic laxative. In the United States, standard-dose PEG with electrolytes is known as Golytely® (PEG 3350 and electrolytes for oral solution) and Colyte®. Low-dose PEG, referred to as PEG 3350, is available in the United States without electrolytes and is marketed as Miralax®. In the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, PEG is available with or without electrolytes. Nulytely® is a sodium-free mixture for specific patient populations.

Polarity Therapy

Polarity therapy promotes healing, relaxation, and well-being by unblocking and balancing energy flow and reestablishing homeostasis within the human energy field. A trained therapist uses anatomical hand positions (connectors) to examine energy flow, discover trigger points, and restore homeostatic energy flow.
