Lymphedema
Secondary (acquired) lymphedema is the accumulation of lymph fluid that obstructs the flow of the lymphatic system, causing persistent swelling of the affected body part. Those experiencing secondary lymphedema have reduced quality of life and functional capacity. In the oncology setting, the most common causes of secondary lymphedema are radiation therapy and lymph node dissection. Lymphedema may not occur immediately, and patients are at risk the rest of their lives. Clinicians should educate patients and caregivers about secondary lymphedema to foster early detection and intervention.
