If you’ve attended ONS Congress® in years past, you’ve likely already noted the incredible opportunity it presents for networking and connecting with oncology professionals from all over the country. As the conference approaches, one important element to start considering is how you might exchange information to establish that connection. In the fast-paced world of business and networking, the traditional paper business card is gradually being replaced by a more modern and efficient alternative—the QR code. These pixelated marvels are not just for scanning links to websites; they’ve also become an ingenious tool for professionals to easily share contact information and avoid the cost and environmental impact of printing paper business cards.

As smartphones continue to dominate the professional landscape, the humble QR code has evolved from its initial use in marketing and advertisements to become an essential networking tool.

Benefits of QR Codes

Here’s why you should consider ditching the traditional business card in favor of a digital QR code for ONS Congress:

  • Eco-friendly solution: Consider the number of business cards you’ve received over the years that quickly made their way to the trash or cluttered your desk. By adopting a QR code, you can contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to networking.
  • Instant accessibility: Several people attend ONS Congress with a folder or binder to hold onto materials or session notes. A QR code can be printed and placed on the back of your folder or kept digitally on your phone as a photo for others to easily scan.
  • Dynamic information sharing: Unlike traditional business cards, QR codes can connect to a vast array of information. You may want to just stick to contact information, or you might also consider linking to other destinations, such as a LinkedIn profile, or online documents, such as a resume or a portfolio.

How to Create Your Own QR Code Business Card

Creating a QR code is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Choose a QR code generator: A quick Google search will reveal that there are several online platforms offering free QR code generators. Consider a reputable option such as QR Code Generator, QR Stuff, or QR Code Monkey.
  2. Input your information: QR code platforms typically provide a user-friendly template for you to fill in the relevant contact information you want to share, and any other details you deem necessary. This is where you might also consider adding links to a LinkedIn profile, personal website, or online documents.
  3. Customize your QR code: Most QR code sites will provide some options to customize the color and style of your code. These allow you to make your code visually appealing and in alignment with your personal brand, while remaining scannable.
  4. Download and test: Once you’ve decided on your linked information and design, download your QR code and test it out with a smart phone before sharing with others.

Embracing QR codes as digital business cards offers a slew of benefits, from streamlining networking to offering environmental sustainability. In the digital age of professional connections, use your QR business card to show off your tech skills and make a lasting impression. Happy scanning!
